Emily was standing in front of us, getting ready to tell us some sort of secret that she had uncovered. I was absolutely positive that I knew what it was, and yet I refused to let myself believe what I already knew. After all, like any powerful mind, I have to rely not only on facts, but the emotions that lead me, firmly but steadily, to the future. My gut is almost never wrong, and it has steered me right in almost every previous occasion. The only times I have been deceived by the feelings I have for a subject involved a masterful deception, coupled with the inherent naivety of my nine year old mind.Fortunately, I am much older now, and much wiser for the years that have passed.

I could not, however, believe that she had not thought to first tell me of this development, rather than go straight to Conrad. They are the most surly, least agreeable and just generally jerk-y person I know. That is not, however, intended to be an insult on their character. They are a wonderful person, no lie, it is just that their personality is prickly. And, besides all of that, I am the leader of the group. I lead the group. I am supposed to be the one that organizes everyone. And yet, she immediately thought of Conrad in her time of… need, I suppose it must have been. As Emily opened her mouth, with Lily standing awkwardly by her side, I made a mental note that I would have to exercise my leadership position a bit more, just to assert that I am, in fact, the leader of the group.

“We’ve done a lot of research, and we have found out quite an amount about the nefarious group against which you have been fighting.” She said. “Due to this extensive amount of research, which was aided by Lily here,” she pointed, “who broke into the offices of Landon InfoTech on numerous occasions after we recruited her. She found out all sorts of things in that office, and, specifically, in the office of one of the upper levels of management, who hired me to my current position there. What she found was some pretty damning evidence of activities of the clandestine variety. Simply put, we believe that that man, Jackson Temeraire Charles, who, may I say, has a wonderful name, is the leader of the Archangel Project.”

I would have liked to say that I was floored. However, I was not. I had suspected that that man was involved for some time, and he seemed to be relatively everywhere. He had to be relatively high up the ladder of that organization. The things that were surprising were that he was actually the leader, and not just a junior level vice president of something. Oh, and the fact that his middle name was “Temeraire”. I have to admit, I did not see that coming.

“Ah.” I said, pondering this a little. “I knew that he had to be relatively high up in the organization, I might not have known a couple of things, like his name for one, but it was inevitable that he would be one of the upper levels of that nefarious group. And, before you ask ,I did actually know a small amount of his name beforehand. I knew his first name. He accidentally divulged it to me once, or possibly someone else did. However, that is relatively important news. How do we proceed from here?”

“Wait.” Emily said. “We’re not done. We also know a bit more about their leadership, so, Conrad, if you still have that cork board thing you were using to try to map it or track it or whatever, you should probably use that.” Then, Emily and Lily, taking turns switching at intervals, began to read off a list of names coupled with positions, and then explained where they fell on the pecking order. There were no less than twenty names, and they all seemed to be rather important.

Conrad rushed off to their room to grab the cork board that they had mentioned earlier. They returned in a flash, and were filling out post it notes and tacking them on about as quickly as the two girls could speak. They wrote and wrote, and the girls read and read, and by the end of it all, we had a pretty good idea of what the organization of this Archangel Project was.

“So, are we all done now?” I asked after the final name had been called.

“That’s it for the leadership. I can list a couple of other things that we’ve found, but, in all honesty, we don’t need to.” Lily responded.

“Alright. That’s good. Now, let’s move on to something that is a little bit better. We have to decided what our plan is with this information, moving forward. I mean, we could keep it hidden,. So that they don’t know that we know. Or we could come out with the information, and be open about the fact that we know who the head honcho is. That wouldn’t be too bad an option, would it?”

“I disagree.” Conrad said. “That’s a fucking stupid idea. I mean, we already have a leg up on them. If we know something about this Charles asshole, why the hell shouldn’t we keep it in our pockets? Why don’t we just go up to the guy and tell him to his face that we are onto him? Or, better yet, why don’t we kill him? Those seem like decent ideas, and we could end this nasty business immediately. Or, at the very least, we could get a couple of shots in before anything particularly bad happens.”

“I respect your thoughts, Conrad, but I disagree with you as well.” I said. “Although, it kinda seemed like you were arguing against yourself at the end there.”

“No. I’m saying we’ve got two options. We either keep this information, and the fact that we know it, to ourselves, or we literally kill the guy so he can be eliminated. Only those options.”

“I suppose that makes sense, although I am not sure how I could have gotten that from what you said. Anyway, I believe that we should go public. If we cannot immediately kill the man, which based on his supposed level of magickal prowess, we probably cannot, then it is best that we expose him .Sure, he will be more powerful than us, but we will have public outrage on our side. I mean, it is only logical that we let Landon fire him at least.”

Then, Lily said something from my back, I whirled around to face her.

“I’m pretty sure that Marcus Landon, you know, the CEO of Landon InfoTech, is also in the Archangel Project. We didn’t confirm it, but it is basically fact. I am as sure of it as anyone can be sure of something without having physical proof.”

“Dammit!” I said in spite of myself. “What the hell? How high up does this go?”

“I wouldn’t be surprised,” said Irya, who had been silent this whole time, “if there were members of the US and other governments conspiring with the Archangel Project to work their nefarious task.”

“What is it they’re trying to do, anyway?” Roxanne asked. “Do we know? I hope we know.”

“We know.” Emily said. “I am pretty sure, at least. From the rest of the documents I read, it seemed like if, I can guess accurately, their goal is to assemble a massive horde of powerful demons. I believe that, when they manage to acquire a large enough horde, and are able to control them, they will release them all at one time.”

“So they’re trying to destroy the world?” Conrad inquired.

“Not quite. It looks like they want to create this threat, and then to force governments from around to world to purchase protection from their company.”

“That’s bullshit. Why would anyone do that? Why would anyone buy that?”

“Well,” Roxanne said, “I’d buy t if there were literally demons destroying everything in my hometown, or in my country. I mean, if there are a lot of demons that are running around breaking things and killing pole, it’s kind of hard to disbelieve in it. I mean, that’s just my idea.”

“Wow, Roxanne, you’re really thinking all evil-like. I like it. It’s a little creepy, but I like it.” I said.

“So what do we do now?”

“I think,” Irya posited, “If we go public, no one will believe us, And therefore, nothing will happen. I mean, there aren’t any demons yet, so [people don’t have to believe us that they are even real. So, we should probably just keep it on the DL. Or, possibly, we could tell the man himself.”

“We shan’t.” I decreed. “We’ll keep it silent. Now, really all we have to do is hope that no one in here is a double agent, because it would be terrible to accidentally let this Jackson know that we know about him.”
